This piece was designed for Bloody Bandit Productions, a Manchester based production company. The new, award winning production company were looking for an artist to create a film poster for their second film ‘What Sophie Wants’ and I was so happy they contacted me to be a part of this wonderful film.
The film, written by Emily Curtis, is a story based on a real life conversation between Emily and her older sister Sophie, who has downs syndrome. In the production company’s words, “the film aims to open a dialogue over the right for a woman with downs syndrome to explore her sexuality, and discover herself as a woman, and provokes us to think about our ideas about sexuality in the disabled community, femininity, ownership of ones own body, and how we can hold two young women brought up exposed to the same hyper sexualised references in a completely paradoxical light.”
The cover reflects several themes that run throughout the film such as the makeup, clothing rail, biscuits and the Breakfast St Tiffany’s and Olly Murs posters. There is also a scene that reflects a famous scene in the film ‘Pretty Woman‘ which inspired the design and placement of the title of the film.
The team loved my signature bright and playful style so I made sure to inject this into the poster too. It was important to have the poster drawn from Sophie’s point of view so a mirror image was perfect to capture that and at the same time have her as the focal point of the poster.
